Delaine De Bas

Delaine De Bas is interested in historical archival material, hidden material, and the relationships in the gaps between them. Her work confronts notions of belonging, in and outside of the Romani Gypsy history, logging numbers, and titles of archives such as ‘Gypsies, Tramps and Strangers’.

Through notes, and drawings which she does everywhere she goes, De Bas has developed recurring motifs throughout her life and practice such as her silver trainers, silver coat, along with symbols of grief, red threads to symbolise journeys and horses, similar to Kate Groobey, yet for symbolic reasons.

Delaine De Bas’ painting on hanging fabric, and use of light is wonderful, whether it is creating worlds to walk through within a space, or painting on windows to create transient shadows that can only be seen at certain times of the day, it is an eye opener for what can be made possible when collaborating with light and space.

Moving forward I am going to experiment with painting, and printing on large pieces of fabric, developing the language of my work across mediums.
